Nearly everyone is storing the Development Applications and Construction Certificates as hard copy records even though they have been scanned.  This is because no one is willing to take the risk on a scanned copy for long-term preservation as required by State Records/Archives.  Therefore the storage areas are being overrun by paper and new shelving, compactus units are being installed or outsourced and the cost of annual storage and retrieval is now exceeding $50,000pa.

The solution has been staring us in the face the whole time.  Microfilm or microfiche records are considered as preserved, as they will last greater than 300+ years.  The microfilm/fiche records only require 10% of your current record storage area.  Why not send your scanned records to be microfilmed and be able to securely destroy the hard copy records and assist the environment through paper recycling.
